Aippaq's Mirror

Tartok
Devoid of storms, yet there is a consistent bitingly cold breeze blowing close to the surface. Constantly at below freezing temperatures.
Description:
In the westernmost regions of Tokotna is a mountain-ringed expanse of shallow, frozen water. During the day the sun melts the surface enough that there is always a thin sheet of water over the ice, but during the bitterly cold nights it once again freezes over, keeping the surface impossibly smooth and reflective. No living creatures call the mirror home, making it a place of quiet solitude, wonder, and, of course, reflection. The surrounding mountains break any incoming storms, keeping the ice field forever calm and silent. To the west is a break in the ring of mountains, causing the expanse of ice to blend seamlessly into the horizon and completely shatter the border between heaven and earth. Broken storms that manage to crawl over the mountains spread across the firmament to produce the most colorful sunsets in all of Tokotna. Once the sun falls and night finds the mirror, it creates a surreal world of stars that many have described as nothing short of ethereal.

Lore:
  • "I've seen Her, other places, but this here's the only place I've seen Her twice. This is where She likes to dance." On the nights when the northern lights are clear and colorful over the mirror, many are said to have spotted an equally vibrant spirit dancing in the ice's reflection. The lights in the sky will remain solitary as usual, but on the earth She can be seen prancing and grinning and howling amidst the green and blue ribbons of light. Little is known about this spirit--whether She is a deity or a mirage is up to speculation--but those few who have watched Her dance find themselves experiencing childish joy and good fortune for years after the sighting.
  • "One night I went to the mirror to be alone after a particularly rough week. I remember it being so cold I couldn't feel my toes, but the sunset that night was the fieriest I'd ever laid eyes on. I was so transfixed while it went from painted clouds to splattered stars to an entire galaxy above and below me, that I didn't move until morning. I just stood still and watched the universe rotate around me. Wouldn't you know it, I was frozen long enough to be literally frozen--the ice had solidified overnight and trapped the bottom of my feet while I'd just stood there! Had to wait an hour or two more once the sun was up just to be able to get back to walking!"
  • "Your father and I journeyed here when we were still getting around to falling in love, and together we watched the lights touch the ice at the horizon. He still denies it, but I could've sworn I saw a blue and green tokota running in the reflection, just for a split second. I still don't know if I was seeing things, but what I do know is that even after putting up with each other for over thirty years, that man still never fails to make me laugh."
