Borga's Respite

Alurik
Always below freezing in the depths and rarely above 40°F near the entrance
Description:
The entrance to the ice cave at the foot of Mount Ravarri, Alurik's largest volcano, is as unassuming as most other caves and rocky outcroppings in the region, though perhaps a bit harder to see through the brush that grows around it. Old painted “DANGER” signs have been posted around by some well-meaning local residents in an effort to not have outsiders wander too far in however, this does little to deter the adventurous sorts that seek it out.

This strange place leaves visitors with a chill running down their spine, and it’s not just from the cold interior. It features a long corridor of chilly stone that slowly morphs into ice as you descend into the earth. Light seems to be engulfed in the tunnel and footfalls echo for what feels to be too far.

It eventually opens into a medium sized cavern of ice with stalagmites and stalactites jutting from the ancient ice. No water runs, but there are the remnants of a long frozen river with some unlucky inhabitants still trapped inside. There‘s also a strange sensation of being watched, but that’s probably just your imagination?

Landmarks:
  • The Overhang - Locals will sometimes rest a bit inside the mouth of the cave in order to cool off from the sweltering heat, but few dare to venture to the end. Several cave paintings are featured further down the tunnel and depict humans standing off against a monstrous creature that appears to have icicles jutting from its back…
  • Lava's Edge - The cave was originally a lava tube, before the ice took over, and you can see edges of the black, solidified lava beyond the entrance to the cave, where the ice starts to creep along the walls. This is beyond the cave paintings, and the point at which visitors are strongly advised to turn back.
  • Borga's Rest - Deep, deep into the tunnels is a carvern with walls of ice so thick you can't see the stone behind them. Iciles surround an open area at the center of the cave, which looks like it has been worn into a comfortable resting place. If you've gone this far into the cave, despite all warnings, hopefully the cavern is empty when you find it...
Lore:
  • Legend has it that one needs special permission from Borga to rest in his den. How one gains that permission is a different story though. Terrible tales exist of people attempting to sneak in that have dissuaded most of the local population from testing if the legends are true. Perhaps you’re more brave than they are or would like to meet with Borga himself?
  • There are those who journeyed into Tokotna on the LoRE expedition that laugh at the idea that this place is Borga's home, having ventured into his 'ice palace' but when asked why they don't enter, they go quiet very quickly. Perhaps this is his summer home?
