General

In Tokotas, each Tokota has a Mane type depicted on their import. These range from the Natural Mane that most Tokotas have, to very rare manes such as Wrinkle and Barbary. The mane in their genotype determines which lineart they are designed on.

The manes of the Sire and the Dam in the breeding determine which manes are possible for their pups. The formula is calculated based on many factors of both involved manes.

Rarity
There are four rarity levels of manes, and each mane has one rarity associated with it. Rarities range from Common to Very Rare and are used to determine the Base Pass Rate (BPR), the Rarity Modifier (RM), and the Step Modifier (SM) of the Mane Formula. More about these will be discussed in their sections below.

Families
Attributes are used to describe manes and place them into a Mane Family. Each mane has Two (2) Associated Attributes. These are used to compare against the other mane in the breeding and determine the Attribute Modifier (AM) of the Mane Formula.

There are four Mane Families, and they are organized based on their Attributes. Manes with two matching attributes are in the same Mane Family. When the Step-Up or Step-Down Chance is possible in breeding, the Mane Family determines which manes are available. Only manes in the same family as one of the parent’s manes are possible.

Manes are further defined by two sets of attributes, except for the Natural mane. The Natural mane is the baseline against which all other manes are compared. As such, it is considered to have No Attributes.

The attributes are as follows and are intended to be generalized descriptions of the manes.
  • More or Less
  • - How much fur does the mane have compared to the Natural Mane?
  • Smooth or Textured
  • - The type of fur the mane has compared to the Natural Mane.
The Natural Mane has No Attributes, and you always use the No Attributes Modifier for the AM in the Mane Formula.

Breeding Formula

Breedings use the following formula to determine the pass rate of manes. The formula uses the Base Pass Rate (BPR), Rarity Modifier (RM), Attribute Modifier (AM), Step Modifier (SM), and Bonuses (BN). Each variable is explained in more detail below. Any mane that is present in the breeding is referred to as the Target Mane.

(BPR x RM x AM x SM) + BN

Base Pass Rate
The Base Pass Rate is determined primarily by the Rarity of the mane. When calculating your odds, you can check the rarity level of the mane you are attempting to breed for and use this as the starting point. Once all the Uncommon, Rare, and Very Rare Chances are determined, Common is the remainder chance.
Base Pass Rate
Uncommon 20.00%
Rare 6.00%
Very Rare 2.25%

Rarity Modifier
The Rarity Modifier is determined by comparing the Rarities between the Sire and Dam. For example, Short x Half are both Uncommon Manes, so they get the matching modifier. Meanwhile, Short x Sphinx do not match and would have a No Matching Rarity modifier.
Rarity Modifier
No Matching Rarity 1
Matching Rarity Uncommon 2
Matching Rarity Rare/Very Rare 2.5

Attribute Modifier
The Attribute Modifier is determined by comparing the Attributes between the Sire and Dam. For example, Short is a Less Smooth Mane and Half is a Less Textured, so they have the One Attribute Matching modifier. In comparison, Short x Sphinx are both Less Smooth and would have Two Attribute Matching modifiers.
Base Pass Rate
2 Attributes Matching 1.25
1 Attribute Matching 1
0 Attribute Matching 0.5
No Attributes 1

Step Modifier
The Step Modifier is determined by how far apart the Target Mane is from the Possible Mane. For example, Natural x Wire are Common x Very Rare and are 3 Steps apart. When determining the chance for Wire, the Mane Present, 3 Step modifier is used.

The Mane Not Present Modifiers are used for Step-Down Chances. For example, there is a Step-Down chance for Curly Mane and Rough Mane, which would use the Mane Not Present, Rare and Mane Not Present, Uncommon modifiers.

The Mane Not Present, Higher Rarity is specifically used for the Step-Up Chance.
Base Pass Rate
Mane Present, No Step 1
Mane Present, 1 Step 1.5
Mane Present, 2 Step 1.25
Mane Present, 3 Step 1
Mane Not Present, Uncommon 0.75
Mane Not Present, Rare 0.5
Mane Not Present, Higher Rarity 0.25

Bonuses
Bonuses come from factions, tribes, traits, companions, and items. They are treated as flat percentage increases and are added after the other modifiers are calculated, such as Aippaq’s Fortune II, which gives a 5% bonus to Uncommon Manes and a 2% bonus to Rare and Very Rare Manes.

All bonuses apply to the Step-Down Chance but do not apply to Step-Up chances.
Step-Up & Step-Down Chance
When two manes with the same Rarity and Two Matching Attributes are in breeding, there is a chance for a higher rarity mane. The Step-Up Chance uses the Base Pass Rate and the Step Modifier. Only manes in the same family and one step up from the Sire and Dam are possible for Step-Up. Except for Natural x Natural, as they have no mane family, they have an equal chance of getting a mane from any family.

BPR x SM

When there is a lower rarity mane than either of the Target Manes then there is a chance for that lower rarity mane. The Step-Down Chance uses the Base Pass Rate, Rarity Modifier, Attribute Modifier, Step Modifier, and Bonuses. Only manes in the same mane families as the Sire and Dam are possible for Step-Down.

(BPR x RM x AM x SM) + BN

Soul Pool Pebbles
Soul Pool Pebbles are a Craftable item that allows selecting a specific mane in Step-Up and Step-Down Chances, such as the Step-Up Chance in a More Smooth x More Smooth Rare Manes having Barbary or Yeti, or Step-Down Chance between More Smooth and More Textured Rare Manes having Silky or Rough.

The tables below contain pass rates based on matching rarity and modifiers. These tables do not consider any bonuses such as tribe or faction. More detailed pass rates can be seen in the Mane Calculator.

Mane Variants

Mane variants are unique visual combinations of two different manes. Every variant involves two manes, the Base Mane and the Modifier Mane.
The Base Mane is the mane a Tokota must have in order to express a mane variant.
The Modifier Mane is the mane that influences the visual change of the Base Mane.
Accquiring Mane Variants
There are three ways that Mane Variants may be used. First, they can appear randomly in breedings with the Base and Modifier manes for the Sire and Dam. The variant can only appear on pups that inherit the Base Mane. For example, in breeding between a Half Mane and Curly Tokota, the Half Mane pups will have a small chance to inherit the Royal Half Mane Variant randomly.

Mane Variants can also be passed down from parents with the mane variant. The number of parents with the variant affects the pass rate.

Finally, Mane Variants can be applied to genos or uploaded Tokotas with the Soul Mirror item. This item can be purchased in the Soul Pool and may be applied through Design Central. The only requirement for a Soul Mirror to be used is that the Tokota’s mane matches the Base Mane.

1 Mane Variant Parent 25%
2 Mane Variant Parents 50%
