Alurik
Hot. Very, very hot. As one of the furthest points from the ocean in Alurik, it doesn't have the benefit of the ocean breezes to provide humidity and temper the anger of the lava flows. In the daytime the air seems to dance with the heat shimmering off the rocks.
Description:
A set of 3 volcanoes which formed around each other and look though they look quite dormant, these three volcanoes are known for being quite active, although their eruptions are not large or overly dangerous - unless you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The area around the peaks is void of plant life, for the regular lava flows ensure that they cannot regrow. However, despite the lack of foliage, the peaks still manage to be an incredible array of colors from dark basalt-colored hardened lava to lighter greys and browns.
Landmarks:
  • The Claw Rend - A stretch of land that has split into various areas allowing for the molten earth below to poke through in massive "scratch" marks. Around these marks, the land is made up of various black rocks that are smooth. The Claw Rend is useful in managing volcano eruptions because they are essentially lava pits. However, there is a danger of them overflowing.
  • The Trio - The three volcanoes: Ravarri, Chihakia, and Inusika. Ravarri is the region’s largest volcano and is considered to be Alurik’s “main” volcano.
  • The Sharpened Fields - A large expanse of rough lava rock and craggy rifts in the earth. Little more than bits of scrub brush are able to survive in this area laying at the feet of some of Alurik's largest volcanoes. The edges of the boulder field are greener and slightly cooler, where the fertile earth left by the volcano produces some of the tastiest fruit and vegetables in Tokotna.
  • The Boulder Field - Right up against the base of the volcano, the Boulder Field is named for the multitude of 3- and 4-ton boulders that blasted out of the volcano when it erupted more violently in its youth. Locals like to challenge themselves by climbing up, around, and through the massive stones to reach the obsidian deposits on the lower slopes of the volcano.
  • Obernik Cave - Gaping from the base of the volcano just past the Boulder Field is the mouth of Obernik Cave. This cave is a long-extinct lava tube that draws those brave enough to explore it with the promise of adventure and beauty. Deep within the cave system can be found brightly-colored mineral pools and glittering semi-precious stones.
Lore:
  • It is thought that an ancient angered spirit bore its claws into the land here, revealing the lava that lurked just beneath the surface and allowing it to bubble up in vibrant strips among the stark black.
  • It is believed that the three volcanoes were formed during a great battle between 2 deities - Ikkuva and Vyuur, and that each eruption from these volcanoes is the anger of the deities bubbling up and reminding the local citizens to appreciate all that they have. When the volcanoes erupt, some locals carry out rituals and various things in an attempt to appease the angry deities.
  • Historically, boys would brave the boulder fields as a sort of rite of passage to manhood. While the tradition has since been discontinued, that has not stopped the young men of the region from following the footsteps of their ancestors across the arid land to reach the mountain.
  • Rumor has it that those who have passed the boulders and made it to Obernik Cave have seen the face of the volcano deity. This is said to be a sacred experience, and those who claim to have seen this deity are either unwilling or unable to speak about the details of the encounter.
