Piaktok Geyser Field

Taniya
The area is quite humid due to the heat produced by the geysers and hot springs. In the winter months, snowfall can be found to cover the area as well as ice in the right conditions. In the spring, summer, and fall months the flat landscape is usually moist and muddy, although the is a large portion of the land that is rocky due to older volcanic activity.
Description:
Piaktok geyser field is a very old and well known phenomenon. Near active volcanic land, although an eruption hasn't been recorded in many centuries, there are over 100 geysers categorized in the large, flat, expansive area with 12 geysers that can be classified active each year. Seen as a popular visiting spot, it has been considered a landmark of the area and part of the spiritual past of the land. The area itself is quite warm with some sulfuric hot springs, so there are many days when Tokotas and other animals will visit for the extra heat the area provides.

Over 100 geysers cover the landscape although only a small portion are active at one time. Sulfuric hot springs are located around the area as well. Salt will sometimes cover over the mud as the heat has evaporated the moisture only leaving a thin salt layer behind. This can attract many animal species like deer and caribou that will lick the salt for extra nutrition.

Lore:
  • Some believe the geysers to be where the spirits of those buried in the ground are able to escape and join the other spirits in the sky. Others say the geysers are the Earth's breath as it sighs throughout the day. Numerous accounts have stated that those who have visited the geysers have seen faces of lost loved ones in the steam as it erupts.
  • The area itself can be quite dangerous due to the sporadic erupting of some of the geysers. Those who visit should remain cautious in traversing the land as to not burn themselves. The hot springs in the area can have a spike in the water's temperature without notice. Those using these springs as bathing spots should be aware of the potential to cause burns and should be cautious when in or around the area.
