Rosen Isle

Alurik
In the summers it is a bit humid by the lake. In the winter, even when it gets below freezing and stiff winds blow over the lake's surface, the lake does not freeze over due to its high salt content. The island itself is of moderate climate most of the year and well suited to sustain life.
Description:
A small-ish island off Alurik's west coast. It only takes two days to walk across it; three if you go from its southeastern-most tip to its northwestern-most tip. Despite the temperatures, trees grow from the ash-rich soil, bringing with them a surprising array of wildlife. Few visit this paradise island as many a Tokota and person disappear if they set foot on its shores; though unlike most places on Tokotna there is no beast or deity responsible, but the work of Obayana and his dreaded pirate crew.
The far side of the island boasts a forest of mangrove trees that is fed by several of the largest rivers in Alurik. The area is mostly popular for its trees and massive roots that sink into the water. Rare species of animals thrive here, and it is a known location for crocodiles and monkeys, who have adapted to the environment by becoming able swimmers. Visitors can experience the area by boat or by the bamboo boardwalk that snakes through the forest.
Landmarks:
  • The Pink Lady - Just a typical salt lake in the Alurik region, only it's pink! The hue, which can vary from a deep red on certain days, to a more purplish tone, is due to a certain type of algae (Dunaliella salina). It also has a very high salt concentration making it extremely easy to float and swim in. The lake itself is on the shallower side (only 10 feet deep in some places,) not that anyone can really reach the bottom easily anyways due to the amount of salt. A set of two docks allow visitors to take boats on the lake, though motors are banned in order to keep the propellers from stirring the lake and inhabitants too much and to keep the noise down for visitors.
  • The Dragon's Maw - It is a cavern that is half-filled with water that leads into the sea. Located within a cove on the western side of the island.
  • The Chest - A small mountain located towards the centre of the island. A cave network runs beneath it, including Dragon’s Maw. It was believed that pirates once buried treasure beneath the Chest and that Obayana and his crew continue to do so.
  • Bayanvi Village - A village of about forty individuals who live above the water in tree houses made of bamboo. Having their homes above the ground helps keep them safe from crocodiles and flooding. They are good-spirited and welcoming towards most visitors.
Lore:
  • The lake is extremely important to locals due to the business it brings in. Locals do what they can to protect it and they distrust anyone who speaks ill of it.
  • Locals say Sikrinerk's tail is magenta because she dipped her tail in the lake on a hot day. They also say this is where rose-colored tokotas get their hue, and many like to have their pregnant tokotas take a dip in the pond before they give birth if they are hoping to have some rose pups.
  • Those local to the Alurik region have often speculated that Obayana has buried treasure somewhere on the island, likely close to or beneath the Chest, but those that have dared venture there to look for themselves have never returned. Whether they are killed by the pirate crew or forced to join in, no one knows.
