Sankhij Village

Maquraq
A bit stuffy, but not as much as you would think. The village is constantly warm and never seems to be affected much by the changing of the seasons. The river and ocean nearby combined with the tree canopies keep things from becoming too hot while the slight humidity prevents things from being too cold.
Description:
The village sits nearby a river originating from the largest lake that drains into the ocean. The people that live here are primarily farmers and fishers, keeping small livestock, growing all sorts of fruits, and catching fish from the ocean. The buildings are largely made of wood with stone accents and may be decorated with small bits of sea glass.

The community, while small, always seems to be bustling. People here value connections with others and will help out their neighbors without asking for anything in return. They will warmly greet any outsider who comes to visit. They are incredibly traditional and many will still own family heirlooms that are hundreds of years old.

The local wildlife tends to be a problem though. Anything that can be easily opened is secured with a lock and the windows are barred. A large group of monkeys nearby has learned that the village is a great place to obtain easy food and other fun "toys". They are not considered pests, however, and will even protect the village and the livestock within from larger animals like predators. Just make sure you keep your valuables secure and out of reach.
Landmarks:
  • Vugadhi Beach - located a fair ways from the village, this is where many children will come during the day to run around in the sand and splash in the ocean waters. There are also a small handful of docks with a few fishing boats attached.
  • Sankhij Market - a large indoor facility where locals can reserve spots to sell their goods. A wide variety of items can be found here from handcrafted jewelry to stands full of canned fruits. The market is closed on the weekends. This is a great place for meeting lots of people!
Lore:
  • ‌The locals have a firm belief that kindness will be repaid with kindness, as well as evil being repaid with evil, and so they will treat every person and animal accordingly. They are not stingy and will freely tell you anything you wish to know.
  • The locals hold sphinx tokis in high regard as their short fur and small stature makes moving along in the forest and waters much easier. In fact, they even seem to worship a form of Sikrinerk where the deity is depicted to look more like a sphinx.
  • The history of Sankhij village is somewhat vague, as it is so old and so much of the history was given from family passing it down through the generations. Only recently have steps been taken to document the stories of old. However from what can be ascertained from the stories that the locals give is that many years ago, some sort of light deity found some weary travelers looking for a new place to call home. Why they were looking for a new home is unclear, some say that a dark spirit chased them out, others say that a particularly large and devastating explosion from Ravarri made their former home unlivable. Either way, this light spirit, which many seem to agree now was Sikrinerk, lead them to the future site of Sankhij.
  • Their friendly spirit extends to Bemahrii; Sankhij is the closest settlement to the isolated city and supplies the majority of goods and materials that the people of Bemahrii need to live.
