Setina's Hot Springs

Alurik
Very, very warm in all seasons. The air has a slightly sulfuric taste and it is ultra humid thanks to the steam vents, hot springs, and surrounding geysers. Mind yourself in winter; if you venture even a few yards away from the springs, the change in air temperature can be quite dangerous.
Description:
Located in the shadow of Ravarri but well outside the reach of historic lava flows, these hot springs are fed from deep underwater springs that benefit from Ravarri's molten heart. There are hundreds of hot springs clustered in the area. In the center near the largest springs are permanent buildings that make up a small resort-type village with an ancient temple dedicated to the lesser spirit, Setina. The geysers which dot the area are home to many microorganisms. These bacteria and heat-loving algae cause the pools of water that surround the geysers to have varying colors of turquoise and sea green. Large quantities of well-preserved fossils are also found here due to these microorganisms and the high mineral content in the soils.
Landmarks:
  • Old Benevolent - The biggest geyser in the valley, Old Benevolent creates a mist that clouds the landscape when it erupts. During the winters here the geyser’s activity causes big fluctuations in the atmosphere. It has been known to reach eruption heights of 195 feet.
  • Bathhouses - To take advantage of the hot springs, bath houses are prevalent. Many have small shops and visitor quarters attached. It's not uncommon to see tokotas enjoying the springs as well, since the waters are said to have healing properties due to Setina’s frequent visits. Some are very simple buildings and some are ornate, massive resorts made of marble and heavy stone.
  • Howling Temple - A temple to Setina that is so old it is said to predate Ravarri itself. A dozen stories high, it serves as a watchtower and as a place of worship. It's named for the odd sound steam makes as it reaches the top of the tower and exits through the eaves of the temple: a whistling, uneasy sound that rings the temple bells.
  • The Hot Springs - The springs themselves are large pools of warm water that many handlers and tokotas alike enjoy. It is a place of calm and relaxation for the weary traveler. Among the regulars, macaque monkeys are often seen soaking in the pools.
Lore:
  • The town has hosted a famous New Year's celebration for hundreds of years. Locals and visitors build lanterns and float them on the hot springs during the long nights of winter in order to ward off evil spirits and offer good wishes to their ancestors.
  • It is said that Setina watches over the hot springs here, encouraging those visiting to relax. While she does travel away from her hot springs, it is a common place for her. Many speculate whether she actually lives in the area here or not.
  • It is said that Setina has calmed many of the geysers that surround the area to provide safe passage for travelers who wish to enjoy her hot springs.
