Skalavik

Narnvak
Warm, temperate summers; cool winters.
Description:
A small farming village of two hundred people that's situated on the edge of a massive forest of ash trees. The village is arranged in a crescent moon shape, with the trees seeming to embrace the homes and farms. On the outer edges of the crescent are the farms, with the homes and shops on the inside. Local livestock includes cattle, sheep and goats. Products sold to the nearest city include milk, cheese, leather, wool, and furniture and other items carved from the ash trees. A small stream winds out of the woods and curves around the left side of the village.
Landmarks:
  • Shrine of the Ash Maiden - This small chapel, located in the center of the village, is where people pray for the intercession of the Ash Maiden, she who walks between this world and that of the spirits. It is considered grounds for banishment to clear the land or fell a living tree without first seeking her advice.
  • Stone Pillars - If you venture far enough into the woods, you might find little towers of flat, translucent stones from the nearby stream laying at the base of some trees. Certain trees are said to be inhabited by a spirit, and each stone is representative of a prayer answered.
Lore:
The residents of Skalavik are a hearty, hardworking and superstitious lot who live (mostly) in peace with the local spirits. According to local legend, the first settlers to the land felled an ancient ash tree, the shrine to a powerful deity. Angered by this destruction, the spirits began to antagonize the village: damming the springs, terrorizing the livestock, and conjuring violent nightmares. At first, the villagers fought back with axes and torches, destroying smaller shrines and cutting down more trees -- but that only antagonized the spirits further. The war between humans and spirits raged for months, until one day, a local girl walked into the woods with a promise: her soul for the safety of the village. The spirits agreed, taking the girl into their fold, and making her one of them.
