The Gallows

Maquraq
Humid and dark, prone to long periods of rain which increase the humidity and can cause flash flooding.
Description:
A trench deep within the forests of Maquraq. The entrance to the trench can be marked by two towering pillars that have been destroyed by the elements. The trench floor is made from thick mud and stone in some parts. Many remains of tokotas, humans and other creatures litter the floor and walls of the trench and in some parts there are words of warning carved into the sides. A twisted and hard to navigate maze of roots can be found deeper in the trench; and just beyond them is a vast, gaping hole that leads deep within the Earth's ground. Thick and tall jungle trees grow all throughout. Some of the trees have even beaten the harsh odds and grown tall directly on the canyon walls. Natural arches and ledges form in some places of the canyon.

At the very end of the trench lies the remains of a forgotten village. The village was once a bustling town full of riches and life, but now has succumbed to the cruelty of the forest. Overgrown and untamed, the village is now just a hidden treasure.
Landmarks:
  • The Pillars: the marks of the entrance, two large and broken down stone pillars with the heads of tokotas carved into them. They have been weathered with age and have clearly been put through the elements.
  • Spider's Web: the mass of tangled roots within the trench, dubbed the Spider's Web by the locals. The tight mess of roots is hard to navigate, even for the most experienced tokotas and humans. Many have perished within these roots.
  • The Well of Forsaken: the large hole within the heart of the trench. Over hanging trees litter its edges, tetering towards the neverending black abyss.
  • The Village of the Lost: the old abandoned village now overgrown and taken over by the forest and its inhabitants. Many of the buildings are now nothing but rubble, but some still stand strong and provide some form of shelter.
Lore:
  • The locals warn against venturing too far into the trench away from the safety of the village, as many who have done so have never returned. The trench is said to be guarded by the darkest and most cruel spirits, one's who will torment and use anyone for their own gain. Ancient tales have it that making the journey successfully leads to direct access to treasures from the gods and deities. Some men have even claimed that they made it out alive with bounties of gold and gems, making them richer than anyone could believe.
  • Other tales are not so exciting, and caution the bold explorer. Eerie cries are said to be heard at night, coming from the bottom of the canyon. The cries sound unlike any living identified creature, and locals tell tales of men who stood at the canyon’s edge and fell over when a vine grabbed their ankles. They believe the trees have faces, meant to lure one in by showing them their deepest desire, only to have them fall to their demise. Others claim the trees are covered in eyes, like the wicked deity Sivoganik.
  • However, some locals to the jungle still seek out the edges of the canyon for the rare plants that grow there and nowhere else, using them for their medical properties. They also use some of the plants for ceremonies and traditional practices.
