The Matriarch

Maquraq
Humid and damp year-round with seasonal rainy periods.
Description:
The tallest Kapok tree in Maquraq. The tree towers over all others and can be seen for miles. The roots are spread throughout the entire forest. You could be five miles away from the Matriarch and still trip over one of her roots. The top of her canopy is akin to a giant crown of leaves. Her branches are covered in lichens, mosses, and vines. The vines are thicker than a human's arm and nearly impossible to sever. The Matriarch is home to colonies of bats that use her flowers as a food source.
The ground surrounding the Matriarch is swampy. Tokotas and humans alike need to take care not to get stuck in the muck. The Matriarch's roots arch out of the swampy water like giant serpents, offering brief reprieve to anyone swimming through the waters. There are large holes in her trunk that lead deep into the earth below.
Landmarks:
  • Mother's Mouth - A large, hollowed out hole in the base of The Matriarch's trunk. It is large enough for several Tokotas to fit into. At the back of the opening, there is a large hole in the ground that leads deep into the earth beneath the large tree. Below, there is a sacred shrine to Xoqoh.
  • World's Vein - The largest root of The Matriarch. It can be traced all throughout the forest of Maquraq. The root radiates a soft energy and is warm to the touch.
Lore:
  • It is said that The Matriarch is the mother of all the other trees of the forest.
  • Legend warns not to cause harm to The Matriarch or the jungle, lest bad things befall you and your bloodline. There are members of the local villages who claim to be a cursed descendent of someone who brought harm to the great tree, and now suffer the consequences.
  • The caverns beneath The Matriarch are said to bring you the closest to the heart of the forest as possible. Those who bring offerings to the shrine beneath will have a fortuitous year and will always find their way through the jungle.
  • It is said all roots will lead you back to The Matriarch.
