Lore:
The jungle was wet and dark when the youngest of 4 siblings left his hut, rain beating against the thatch buildings. The only thing on his eager mind was the riches spoken about by the village wives, their stories woven like the intricate clothes they made. Enough gold to feed a family, it was said, and then enough to feed the family's great-grandchildren. As he started into the jungle’s undergrowth, he looked back at his battered home and began his trek. His own map, drawn by the shaky hand of a 10-year-old, became flooded as raindrops soaked into the paper, smudging the charcoal and ruining much of his hard work, but he kept going. He had walked for hours, maybe days, he couldn't remember. His stomach screamed and his legs ached, but he refused to give up. With the last remnants of his map, he went deeper. He remembered his home, his kind mother, strong father, and loving brothers. He didn't want to see them starve or hurt anymore, but the jungle was getting so dark. He was terrified; he wanted his mother. Knowing he was lost, he kept walking with tears in his eyes until he finally collapsed and his breathing ceased. His small body laid upon the gold-encrusted stones of an ancient city. It was there that something took pity on him. The bravery and selflessness of the child could not go unrewarded. Although the entity could not bring him back the way he was, it instead gave the boy a new form with a new purpose. He would never let anyone stumble through the dark blindly and suffer as he did, but light their way and guide them to their destination. But this tale was merely an intricate legend spoken by the village wives while weaving their colorful garments.
Many see him as a lucky spirit that brings messages, written or spoken, to their ancestors. As he guides the deceased to their rest, he listens to their life and remembers. Because of him, generations upon generations of memories will never be forgotten. Xoqoh is rarely seen, but if you get lost in the jungle’s dark depths, look to him to guide you to the light. Sometimes he might even lead those exploring to untold treasures.
