City of Ice

(Location)

Description

In the northern reaches, winter temperatures reach as low as minus 31 degrees Fahrenheit. Workers spend months cutting blocks of ice and transporting them to the festival grounds. From there, sculptors come from around the world to chisel and form the hefty displays. In winter, temperatures in Jukkasjärvi can drop down to as low as -40 C (-104 F).

The temperature inside the hotel hovers at a constant of -5 to -7 C. We provide you with expedition-style sleeping bags which are tested for extreme temperatures, so you’ll be fine with just thermals, hat, warm socks and a mid-layer jumper.

Outdoor winter wear such as warm overalls, warm boots, hats and mittens are included when you stay at Icehotel. Your base layer or thermals, including long-johns and a long-sleeved t-shirt, should ideally be made out of wool, but also remember to pack fleece sweaters, a scarf and plenty of warm wool socks.

A place to discover silence, northern lights, glistening snow clad forests, reindeer, cloudberries, kettle coffee and much more.

Dog sledding, skiing or snowmobiling in winter, or river rafting and cycling in summer, takes you into the vast uninhabited boreal forest. Fishing, midnight sun and northern lights safaris are amazing ways to experience the Arctic

e three-layer technique should be recommended.

The inner layer (underwear) should allow moisture to escape from your body. Synthetic or woolen clothing is recommended. Avoid wearing cotton since it retains moisture.

The intermediate layer must isolate the air and control the humidity. A woolen, flannel or fleece sweater is recommended.

The outer layer must cut the wind and humidity while not affecting comfort and mobility.

Essential accessories: A hat / toque covering the ears, scarf / scarf, gloves or mittens and boots (large enough to put on thick stockings).

Spend a cozy yet thrilling night in the snow hotel, enjoy a delicious dinner in the spectacular ice restaurant or simply visit to marvel the vast corridors packed with snow suites and ice sculptures.

We are focusing to give our guests the best seasonal experiences all-year-round. After the snowy winter arrives the spring when nature comes alive, the trees grow new leaves, flowers start to blossom and the birds fly back from the south. In the summer months June and July, we enjoy long bright days and the sun doesn’t set at all! In August we still enjoy warm days but the evenings start to get darker and we can witness amazing starry nights. Colourful nature (“ruska”) and autumn auroras are the real highlights of the fall, one of the most beautiful seasons in Finnish Lapland. Fall is the best time for hiking trips!

The hotel is located in the heart of the tiny village Jukkasjärvi, with about 900 residents. The beds in the cold rooms have a bedframe made of ice, slatted bed base with mattress, reindeer skins and pillows.
