(Character)

Noatak, like the river, nothing can phase him, he continues to move through life. Also named Shesh, because in his youth he survived a bear attack while chopping wood, killing it with the hand ax that he carried. He was praised of course, “Strong man”, they called him, “Shesh”, the one who killed the Brown Bear. Everytime he would scowl and spit, “Do not call me Shesh, I am killer of nature”. He blamed himself for the animals death, it was only following the course of nature. He saw it as Nature herself speaking and he responded in violence. No longer would that be. Since then, Noatak left his home to pursue a new life, one of harmony with Nature.

 

Now, older with  deep wrinkles, thick skin from the sun and crisp winds. Eyes almost hidden by laughter lines. He is the compassionate man who was able to break through “Goreface”’s hostility. He couldn’t stand to see the fear in her eyes as she attacked those who had attacked her first. Day after day he sat in her “territory” doing nothing, though, almost always whistling and whispering softly under his breath. He knew she was watching him. He had no idea why she let him live. Every now and then again he would catch a glimpse of white, the sun reflecting off of her blinded eye. He could feel her presence, the deep rumbles from her throat, warning him to flee. But that didn’t matter. Eventually, she came closer, curious as to why this human had done nothing but sit. Slowly, their relationship was formed into some sort of mutual friendship. They all called him crazy old man, he would laugh and say that that he must be crazy then. He lays with his back propped up against a tree, whistling tunes of summer winds and starlight to soothe the massive beast at his side. They are content. He called her “Tiguaq”, his adopted daughter and “Pitsiark”, beautiful in every way.

 

Together they live within the Nerguii Tribe. Their lifestyle sings of tranquility and communion with the earth and its inhabitants.
