Ajax comes from northern royalty; his family was a clan that controlled much of the far northern territory, and they regularly went to war with other clans for reasons that Ajax has personally forgotten. All he remembers is that after one great battle, he and his cousins disagreed about the splitting of the spoils. When the clan shaman intervened on behalf of his cousin, Ajax became enraged by the slight. Facing disinheritance, he drank himself into a stupor and set out to slaughter his cousin's entire household. His lover, a shaman in her own right, cast a fog over his mind and when he awoke he found himself covered in blood...and the remnants of his cousin's reindeer herd lay spread out around him. To protect him from the clan which would surely demand his blood in exchange, his lover turned him into a hare.

An exile, perpetual prey, he wandered for the span of several lifetimes before realizing she had also given him the power to turn back into a man. Now, though, he has forgotten the way home (forgotten much of what he once was). Now he wanders Tokotna, accompanied by an exile in her own right, searching for some place -- some thing worthy of calling home again.
