Mal is a warrior. He is self possessed and dignified, but rarely trusting of new people. He really only gets along with his handler, although he tolerates the other Tokotas that he must work with; he's frequently the target of the goofier Tokota's jokes and playful behavior because of his uptight attitude. He is extremely ambitious in exploring and hunting, but he rarely takes what he considers to be a risk (although his handler may have a different opinion on that!).
