Smidge was a gift to a Nik, to be his "assistant" in search and rescue or to play with the children and patients who visited the hospital. It turned into him being like a child to Nik and Val, his antics and craving for treats making him seem very childish. A rom-com marathon introduced him to cherry fudge ice cream and, to make him "cute", he was given a green and blue striped scarf to wear at home.
