Aituserk was born at the Tartok Dire Sanctuary. Her mother, a former wild, had been taken in several years prior. Artem was studying for his Dire Handler's License at the time, and helped to deliver the litter; when he graduated from his training programme, his boss signed Aituserk over to him as a reward. (The name Aituserk is from a native word meaning 'gift.')

Aituserk is strong and proud, and very protective of her handler and her brother Aqillutaq. She helps Artem with his job, charting the caves of Iluq forest, though of course she has to be careful to avoid the tightest passages (yes, she has gotten herself stuck several times.)
