Chaol can be a cold figure to his enemies. He was one of the few people not afraid of Aelin but have always been suspicious of her. Chaol has been described to have a friendly relationship with his packmates and they respect and honor him. When under stress or in pain, Chaol's coping mechanism is hunting, pushing his body and muscles until they can't take any more or until he can't carry more prey. The scars on his cheek are from one fight with Aelin and left a reminder of what he had done or actually didn't do.
