Arlo lives in a very nice, large house in the city with a wealthy human family, and serves as a faithful companion to the family's youngest daughter Alice. Alice has trouble socializing with other children, and is often so lost in her own imagination that she wanders off and gets lost. The family adopted Arlo to keep her company, to protect her from danger, and to guide her in the right directions. Arlo and Alice share a very special bond, and they adore each other to pieces. Alice swears she can understand the toki sometimes. 

Often times, Alice will let Arlo run free in the forest behind their neighborhood, to go hang out with other tokotas. When he's running free, Arlo is never without his best friend Lennox, who protects the tiny toki out in the wildnerness, just the way Arlo protects Alice in the city. Alice adores Lennox, too, and will sometimes sneak him into the house for play dates.
