Lore:
The oldest stories in Tokotna describe a creature that stepped out of the Aurora onto the Ridge of Elders. The first tokota who came upon this creature returned to the rest with a single name: Aippaq. They are both the ground and the spirit of the land that all life came from. The tokotas, the people, and the spirits could find their roots in the Great Creator Aippaq.

As the years passed more legends about Aippaq sprung up, and they appeared before more and more creatures. While their form never changed, sometimes Aippaq was the warm and motherly voice for a cold pup, or the grandfatherly presence offering advice. Aippaq is whatever is needed at the moment they appear. So stories refer to Aippaq as he, she, and they with no objection from the deity.

Aippaq's purpose seems to be keeping the cycle of life, death, and rebirth flowing. Whenever death happens, all souls return to Aippaq through the auroras. After a time, each soul returns in a new form with a new purpose.

More deities arose, all under the watchful eyes of Aippaq, each with a different purpose given to them by the Great Creator. As long as the deities do not overstep, then Aippaq doesn’t interfere with their fights and blessings. Tokotas say that Aippaq uses the auroras to see every corner of Tokotna and maintain balance.
