Forms:
  • Shown
  • A tasseled, diamond kite with orange and blue-gray kaleidoscopic patterns. It sounds like it's forever whistling a gentle tune. (Only in the form of this inanimate object do they dare veer close to civilization.)
  • A similarly-colored thrush with a voice that is ten times its size.
Lore:
On the slopes of the Tartoks in spring, the bugling of elk is matched by a high-pitched scream. It's clearly animal, but which animal exactly, varies. When the seabirds come home to roost, the creature waddles among them, shifting them here and there, pushing them to take to the skies and make noise.

Ikios announces their arrival whenever they please, scattering the Desna pack members fighting over a moose carcass, waking campers traveling through the hills with their Tokotas, and causing ice to crack and tumble from the face of the high Tartoks, all with some flavor of shrill song. Locals say Ikios "screeches fluently" in all the voices of the continent, and their voice drives hikers mad as often as it guides them away from danger. They don't really seem to have a moral compass, disrupting and celebrating the sonic current of the wilderness in equal measure.

Simply put, they just like to make noise. And they stop entirely on their own timeline.

On a rare day, Ikios will stop, sit by Innia Turik Overlook, and say nothing, seemingly staring off into the distance at something far, far on the horizon, almost as if they are finally content, for once at peace with the sounds of the wild without having to add to them.

Just don't expect the calm to last.
