Nutaaq Island

Tartok
Covered in a permanent layer of permafrost, endlessly cold. Rarely reaches over -1°C
Description:
A somewhat small island due north of the Frost Dragons. Said to be cursed by Borga, it's never quite out of winter, and is coated in ice and snow. It's surrounded by the wastes, sheets of ice with strong, deadly winds. The island is scattered with small villages with roughly 1-3 families.
Landmarks:
  • Aupti Village - A small, 7 family village of rather quiet individuals. Named for the flattened plains beside their village, they have mastered the art of walking silently through the powdery snow. The fields nearby have sparse, mostly dead grasses, and small bushes.
  • Nutarniq Village - Another small village, typically housing only 4 families at a time. It's a common stopping spot on the way to Aupti Village. The village is nestled closely to a large hill, known for hosting beautiful auroras, when the skies are free of the intense storms Nutaaq is known for. The hills nearby the village are sparcely forested with evergreen trees.
  • Ukkarnit Trench - Considered extremely dangerous, Uukkarnit Trench is only visited by the most brave of teams. Long, winding caves can be found deep within the trench, with archeological discoveries aching to be found. Peering down into the trench, it's not uncommon to see frozen ice-age mammals embedded in the thick blue ice.
  • Olikpok City - A large, cramped city. It's frequently regarded as the capital city of Nutaaq Island, as it is also the first point of contact to the rest of Tartok.
  • Makittaq Bridge - A three mile long concrete bridge. It spans 50 yards across, with tall walls on either side. All travel to Nutaaq Island is through the bridge, and is frequently regarded as the most dangerous man-made construct in Northern Tartok. The weather is unforgiving, and the three-day long trek across the bridge to Olikpok City should only be taken by the bravest, and healthiest, of souls.
Lore:
The island was founded as a trader’s port back in the 1940s. Back in the day, Nutaaq was a hospitable island, and was not coated in a thick layer of permafrost. However, due to the sudden and severe change of weather, it is rumoured that Borga himself cursed the island and its inhabitants in an attempt to permanently erase its existence from history. Years have passed, and while the island was rediscovered, it had created a society of its own. After almost eighty years of being isolated, they have developed technology and methods of living that vary far from those in Tokotna.
