Olikpok City

Tartok
Cold but tolerable. Air is heavy with steam, smoke, and the scent of an unkempt city.
Description:
A cramped, bustling city of neon with never-ending frigid air, Olikpok City is the main hub of Nutaaq Island. It's a relatively new city, but has already quickly fallen into disrepair due to poor upkeep, repeatedly freezing alleyways, and extreme winter storms.
Landmarks:
  • Main Street - The streets are lined with ice, black with soot, and glowing with lights. Vents hiss with heat from underneath the city, and there’s the general smell of fire and pollution in the air, making it a piercing breath to take combined with the frigid temperatures. The buildings seem maintained, but not to an excellent standard. Patches are obvious and stand out against the original buildings’ exteriors, and there seems to be people from all walks of life here.
  • Slums - The slums are the lower parts of the cities. Anything below floor 5 of any part of the city except for the immediate area of Main Street is considered lower class, and dirty. The alleyways that make up the slums are small, uneven, and dangerous.
  • Upper Crust - The warmer, upper levels of the city are warmed by the rising heat from below. Only those above a certain wealth class have access to the upper sides of the city. Sky bridges span between the towering buildings. The furnishings inside are imported from all across Tokotna, looking like their own palaces. There's a severe contrast between the upper crust and the rest of Olikpok City.
  • The Biodomes - Four evenly spaced, large domes that house small park-like spaces. Given Olikpok's frigid location, these domes provide a warm, safe place to be "outside." Notably, the tops of the domes are large, square panels, surrounded in metal frames, frequently frosted over. It's common to find stray Tokotas sleeping here, as well as unhoused individuals. It's a cultural norm to simply ignore them, as given Olikpok's political climate.
  • Wylde's Corner Store - A small, two-story store two alleys out from the Main Street. It's surprisingly advertised everywhere, with graffiti pointing toward the store. It's one of the few places with a sliding glass door and uncomfortably warm interior.
Lore:
When Olikpok City was founded, it was only known as the Olikpok Village, consisting of five large families. When the Great Freeze blocked Nutaaq Island from the mainland, the families were forced to settle where they could, or risk certain death. It's unknown how the city managed to boom abruptly, with large towering skyscrapers barely piercing the clouds. Olikpok City has been cut off from Tokotna for decades, since the ice connecting them to the mainland had thawed. However, due to Tokotna’s advancement in technology, a bridge construction began and had reached the island. Originally officials had wanted to repurpose the land as a trading point, which was long thought abandoned.
Olikpok City had been thriving, at least, its upper class had been. Wracked by severe class separation and civil unrest, their economy is delicate and balances on the sale of black market weapons, tokotas, and foreign goods that are smuggled onto the island. The lower class consists of workers, tradesmen, and thieves, while the upper class consists of the government, and those born with a silver spoon between their teeth. The class unrest is growing, and with Tokotna finally breaching Olikpok’s borders again, the tensions have only risen higher. The lower class have ideals and fantasies of living up on top, while not knowing that the upper classes have to backstab and brawl for their fortune. Gambling, roulette, and the stock market are risky trades, made even riskier with Tokotna’s interference.
Olikpok’s government is less than happy about contact being made once again. Tokotna officials have been sticking their nose around, and even a few have gone missing. Tourists are leered at, and the locals are less than welcoming to the tokotas that come from the mainland. The city is full of opportunity, if you know where to look, and know who to trust.
