Sikatou Ruins

A cold wind blows in from the Glacier. The area has poor natural lighting, made worse by frequent fogs.
Description:

The Sikatou Ruins are a collection of old, stone buildings that have slowly crumbled away over hundreds of years. Moss and vines cover many areas of the Ruins; however, lucky adventurers may come across abandoned artifacts such as old vases or dust-covered plates. The Ruins are extensive and wanderers must be careful not to get lost in them - or become injured while walking across the uneven, and often slippery, stone.

An explorer who has made it through the previous hazards must still contend with the Maxiilamits who patrol the area.

Landmarks
  • The Sentinels - This arrangement of stone pillars near the Sikatou Ruins have unknown origins, currently the subject of much debate. They form a rough ring composed of the stones scattered nearby and are vaguely Tokota-shaped, though there is some speculation that they are a natural formation. These stones are frequented by Artemis’ hunters during certain times of the year; these pillars seem to have some cultural or social significance to her pack. They have thus far been very tight-lipped about their significance.
  • The Pit - At the edges of the ruins is a large, stone lined pit, the ceiling of which is shattered. Sections of the missing ceiling can be found within the pit, often clustered together and piled up against the walls beneath scratch marks like they'd been used to climb out of the pit. But the area of the pit is certainly not large enough to have contained all the Maxiilamits that have been counted roaming around, so exactly what left the scratch marks and whether some unlucky explorers are going to suddenly stumble upon it and never return is uncertain.
Lore:
  • The Ritual - A gigantic cracked granite bowl has been found at what may once have been a central gathering place between the ruined buildings. It holds frozen ash and petrified wood. Pictographs carved into the bowl depict sparking, curving flames and what might be skeletons or other forms dancing in the flames. Far away from the flames and figures are a few crudely carved beasts with splitting jaws which must be Maxiilamits.

Current speculation is the granite bowl was both an important component in a ritual of banishment and a record of how to perform it. Unfortunately, the attempts to reconstruct the ritual have gone badly so far.
  • Creatures:
    • Maxiilamits - See their dedicated page here.
    • Ruin Rats - Few large creatures survive in the ruins since the reoccurrence of the Maxiilamits, but rats have been found hiding among the rubble, ready to tidy up after any explorers. The subspecies is distinguished by their pale gray coats and the slight iridescent sheen to their eyes. They seem exceptionally intelligent.
