Lore: Long ago, a mother bear walked on the ice sheet surrounding Nutaaq Island. It was a wild place, humans not yet tainting nature's beauty. At least, this is the story spoken by the elders of the island. They speak of Sos- a polar bear spirit. They say the northern lights come from her tears, shimmering and streaking like the oil leaking from the wrecks at Nutaaq's edge. Because of Sos' loving grace, it is considered taboo on Nutaaq to hunt polar bears, although by no-means illegal.

Innumerable ship wrecks, from eras of both wood and steel, surround Nutaaq Island as if its own coral reef. Countless lives were lost, both human and animal alike. When the great permafrost took over the island, Sos and her cubs would vanish, along with many other of the islands first spirit inhabitants. The northern lights, once a beacon of hope and beauty, disappeared with her. For many years, sailors souls stuck within the wrecks and ice would cry out, causing wells and crashes of angry waves and vicious sleet.

As if the sky opened above them, the island, once thought deserted by the guiding spirit, was covered in shimmering blue-green streaks. On the distant shore of Olikpok City, a ship carting thousands of gallons of shimmering black oil ruptured on Nutaaq's frozen shore. The sailors claimed at that moment, they heard the cry of a wailing polar bear, an echoing chorus of sorrow. Sos has once again made an appearance. She is a powerful, benevolent spirit who roams the icy deep, guiding deserted and lost souls to safety. The mother bear wanders the frozen wasteland of shipwrecks and bones, a guiding light to the souls once captive in Nutaaq's frozen grasp. The shimmering lights above guiding ships in the night from the ragged icy edges.

The islanders speak fondly of her existence, though she is rarely, if ever, seen in the city limits. Her snow-white fur being spoken of as a comfort in death. Now that she has returned, the northern lights once again dance across the island when the skies are clear. It's not uncommon for sailors to adorn their attire with tufts of polar bear fur, in hopes for safe travels, and to pray for Sos' protection.
