The Whispering Shoals

Narnvak
Very humid, quite chilly year-round but it never grows truly cold. There is always mist coming in off the sea, with occasional strong gusts of wind. This part of the coastline is subject to very violent storms in the late summer and early autumn
Description:
A large steep coast, with a rocky beach. Lots of native birds nest inside the wall of the steep cliff. The rocks may hide treasures like amber and fossils. Many small animals seek shelter between the larger rocks. Plantlife is not excessive here, due to the harsher conditions, but there are still plenty to find. The rocks also continue quite far into the ocean, often reaching just below the surface, making navigation with boats hard.
Wise sailors never go near it, as it is a warren of dangerous sandbars and rock formations; the foolish ones lay buried at the bottom of the sea. It is a subject of many local superstitions, and it is a common expression that lost ships, sailors, and treasures are “taken by the Shoals.” The sound of the waves and the wind on the rocks is eerie and is said to be the voices of the sailors who drowned in the treacherous waters. However, the many shipwrecks have left the bottom of the shoals covered in treasures and gold coins, which lure divers and treasure hunters to the area.
Landmarks:
  • Dead Watch Lighthouse - This lighthouse is on the north end of the beach. Although it is no longer in use, a very mysterious old man lives there as its caretaker. Locals insist that they sometimes see strange lights coming from the tower on stormy nights and the shapes of ghostly sails floundering in the shoals.
  • The Gull Aerie - Due to its isolated nature, the Whispering Shoals are a haven for seabirds, and they often settle on the rock stacks to nest. The Gull Aerie is the tallest of these stacks, and the birds who live there are uncommonly aggressive towards trespassers. They chase away any living creature who comes near their nests, giving rise to the belief that they guard a valuable treasure.
  • Steihuin - A large natural formed rock bridge. If you look closely you can see the remains of some ichnites carved deep into the rock's surface.
  • Yuvak Cave - A cave lying beneath an overhanging cliff. The entrance is covered during high tides.
Lore:
  • Legend has it that the ship of the famous pirate Bernt Erol the Bold sunk somewhere around here, with a great treasure on board. Other legends say that he hid the treasure inside the Yuvak Cave.
  • Steihuin is said to be the gate to another world. Some say, if you stay around for longer you can hear the spirits talk.
  • The sounds of the waves and the wind on the rocks and shale beach sound eerily like voices. Locals believe that if one goes to the Whispering Shoals, they can hear the voices of the spirits and the dead who lie beneath the waters.
  • Rumor has it that the caretaker of Dead Watch lighthouse is no more than the spirit of a man who lived there long ago, or is perhaps a forgotten sea god. The man never leaves the lighthouse, and even the oldest locals remember that man being there when they were children, and he has never seemed to age since then. The ghostly apparitions that appear during storms only lead to more speculation.
