Barbary Mane

The Barbary is a rare mane type found in tokotas, and displays on all build types. The Barbary mane gets its name from the visual similarity to the Barbary lion. The Barbary mane is characterized by long fur on the neck, chest, shoulder, underbelly, and tail, and medium-length fur on the cheeks, forehead, elbows and haunches. The remainder of the body features the classic short fur usually found on the body. As with all tokota fur, this mane is a double coat that repels water.

The Barbary mane first appeared as a random mutation resulting from the breeding of a Natural mane and a Yeti mane, and is believed that the combination created a mutation of the gene in charge of determining where to grow the classic Natural mane's "mane". Through selective breeding, this "mane" has evolved into a dense, burr-resistant coat that makes the tokota an excellent land explorer and brawler, giving the neck further resistance than a Natural mane's.

Barbary maned tokotas have a tendency to fluff up their whole body to appear larger than normal, a scare tactic put to good use for battle and taking down larger prey.

Since Barbary manes became more common place than when they first appeared in Tokotna, many handlers use their thick fur to line clothing for insulation, usually harvested during grooming in the warmer months.
