Silent Water Island

Alurik
Temperate at the base, hot at the rim of the caldera. Rainfall is common.
Description:
There is in Alurik a place the locals dread and the tourists are told to avoid. Amidst the relaxing springs and the rumbling volcanoes, just off the coast of Alurik, lies an island with a terrible secret. At first glance, it looks like an ordinary island, rocky shores take you to shrub-covered paths. As you climb up its side towards the great caldera that sits in the middle of the island, the vegetation withers, to be replaced by patches of dark green moss. You keep climbing up, the temperature rises, and your eyes sting a little, probably from the sweat. At the top, after about three hours of marching, you finally see the crater of the caldera, filled with gorgeous turquoise water. The color is so bright it looks out of place compared to the rocky rim of black and grey that holds it. You start feeling dizzy and you sit down. And then a thought strikes you. You haven’t come across a single creature. You haven’t heard a buzz or a chirp. Nothing lives here. The island is completely silent.
Landmarks:
  • The Caldera - The caldera that holds the dreaded water. The turquoise water is in fact mostly made of sulfuric acid and very poisonous to all life forms, hence the name. Nothing can live from that water, and the toxic gases that emanate from it can be deadly. Many travelers have fallen victim to Silent Water Island’s terrible secret.
  • The Temple of Water - A temple built floating above the water, held up by several trees which provide support. Access to this temple is possible only by ladder. It was once a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, who flocked to the elevated area for its amazing views and ecosystem. It fell into disrepair, however, when the once-healthy lake water was replaced by sulfuric acid and the area became toxic.
Lore:
  • It is said that dark spirits reside in the murky depths of the water and that anyone going in should invoke Sikrinerk’s name for protection
  • People who have fallen victim to the toxic gasses claim to have seen some sort of female spirit clad in turquoise come to take their soul.
  • Kijin or the Yellow Dog of Silent Water Island: Kijin is a silky maned toki of straw-colored fur that has chased many a misguided wanderer out of the island. Kijin once believed to be a benevolent spirit, is in fact the faithful companion of a team of researchers that often go to the island to study the minerals that it holds.
  • Sometimes at night, the rim of the caldera shines blue, and strange forms dance on the edge. It‘s the sulfur that burns an electric blue.
