Many items and totems can be applied to breedings. Please see the Build Breeding Guide, Mane Breeding Guide, Base Coat Genetics Guide and Marking Genetics Guide for more information. Additionally you can view all items that can be used in breedings here.
There are a few ways that breedings can result in Penalties or Health Risks. Most Penalties (Blind, Deaf, Spinal Defects, Lame, Frail) can be healed with an Elemental Heart. Infertility and Deceased Pups can be cured using a PotA Token
Visible Inbreeding
You can check if inbreeding is present using the Tokotas Lineage Checker. If breeding Tokotas that are, or will be inbred, the following Health Statuses may occur in your litter:
Last Line Inbreeding
Last line inbreeding occurs when a duplicated ancestor does not appear in the pups’ lineage. The breeding will be rolled with the same penalties as normal inbreeding, however the resulting pups will not be marked as inbred in their health status.
Merle x Merle
Breeding two Tokotas with the Merle Gene may result in pups with homozygous merle. These Tokotas may be affected by the same health risks as inbred Tokotas.
Sore Injury
Sore injuries may produce empty litter. Depending on severity of the injury, the chances of an empty litter rises.
Preventing Deceased Pups and Infertile
The only way to prevent pups from being born deceased or infertile is by using a Box of Chocolates.
Breeding forms should only list the required information. Extraneous information, including links, may cause your breeding to be sent to corrections. The breeding requests form must remain intact, and you may not remove, add, or change any lines in the form. Tokotna.com has automatically generated breeding forms for each Tokota on the Forms tab, under Breeding, for Tokotas with AoAs (breeding rites). As of May 2023 you are required to use Tokotna generated breeding forms. You may remove traits and companions that you do not want rolled.

Monthly Breeding Limits
- Breedings are divided into four main sections: main thread breeding, starter breedings, splits and abandoned pups. You can view all of these on your Bonuses & Monthly Limits page.
- Main thread breedings have 5 different slot types. Each month you are able to post 2 standard breedings; 1 image/talisman breeding; 1 passionate I breeding; 1 passionate II breeding; and 1 Starbarks breeding.
- Starter breedings have 3 different slot types. Each month you may post 3 standard starter breedings; 1 ardent starter breeding; and 1 Nestoko Tea breeding.
- Split breedings have two different slot types. Each month other players may post 2 PoTL to you splits and 5 Non-PoTL to you splits. These splits may be posted in either the main thread or the starter thread, and must be posted by a player other than you.
- You can post an unlimited number of abandoned pups into the Abandoned Pup thread each month. You may also post up to 5 Threads of Fate and up to 4 Bone Flutes in the Abandoned Pup thread each month.
- Breedings that you post may belong fully to you, or be split with another player.
- Breedings that you post and split with other members use your personal breeding slots.
- If they are posted into the main thread they will use one of your main slots. If they are posted into the starter thread they will use one of your starter slots.
- Breedings that involve Starter Tokotas may only be posted in the Starters thread, not the main thread.
- Breeding slots roll over on the 1st of each month. Unused breeding slots do not carry over.
- You may not attempt to circumvent breeding limits by having a friend or another account post a breeding for you. If you are caught trying to circumvent the breeding limits, you will face a possible ban from breeding.
- Breedings requests cannot be posted before both sire and dam both have their AoA badge posted on their Tokotna import. Any attempts to do so will be denied and may result in a warning.
Breeding Slot Types
Main Thread
- [Month’s] Breedings
- These are breedings posted to the main thread. They do not require any additional items or traits to use.
- Image/Talisman
- This slot is used by providing an Inukshuk Talisman, using the Woodpecker Totem, having a Shiba and Shikoku companion equipped, or producing a breeding image/story of both Tokotas involved in the breeding. Breeding images follow the group’s universal art requirements.
- Passionate I
- This slot is used by posting a litter where the sire or dam has the Passionate or Passionate II trait or a Shiba companion.
- You are not required to list this trait in the traits list, but if you remove it from the list you must indicate which parent has Passionate on the Using Extra Breeding Spots line.
- Passionate II
- This slot is used by posting a litter where the sire or dam has the Passionate II trait.
- You are not required to list this trait in the traits list, but if you remove it from the list you must indicate which parent has Passionate II on the Using Extra Breeding Spots line.
- Starbarks
- This slot is used by providing a Starbarks Latte.
Starter Thread
- Starter
- These are breedings posted to the Starter thread.
- Each starter breeding requires a Starter Slot item or a permission to a specific Starter Tokota.
- Ardent
- This slot is used by posting a litter where the sire or dam has the Ardent trait or Shikoku companion.
- You are not required to list this trait in the traits list, but if you remove it from the list you must indicate which parent has Ardent on the Using Extra Breeding Spots line.
Splits
- PotL Splits
- These slots are used by another user posting into the Main or Starter thread and indicating that you have the Pick of the Litter.
- Non-PotL Splits
- These slots are used by another user posting into the Main or Starter thread and indicating they are splitting a litter with you and they are receiving the Pick of the Litter.
Abandoned Pups Thread
- Thread of Fate
- These slots are used by posting a Thread of Fate to the Abandoned Pup thread.
- Bone Flutes
- These slots are used by posting a Bone Flute to the Abandoned Pup thread.
Split Breedings
- Split breedings are breedings in which two players will split the resulting litter between them.
- You may split any number of breedings that you post each month.
- Other players can post up to 2 PotL to you breedings and 5 Non-PotL to you breedings each month. You cannot claim PoTL in a litter not posted by you if:
- You own both Tokotas being bred.
- You own the permissions to both Tokotas being bred.
- You own one of the Tokotas and own the other's breeding permission.
- Doing the above is considered an attempt to have another user post a breeding for you which is against the rules.
- Members that consistently take the best pups from split litters when they do not receive PoTL may be subject to investigation.
Corrections
- If you make an error or omission on your breeding form you will be directed to repost to the monthly Breeding Corrections thread.
- In order to post into the Corrections thread you must include a link to all previous breeding attempts.
- If you are changing a parent in a litter only one parent may be changed. If both parents are changed the breeding must be reposted to the main or starter threads.
- You have three days after Breedings reopen to post your corrections from the previous month for it to count for the previous months' breedings slots. After that time window, you will need to re-post to the main thread, at which point it will count for the current month.
Slots and Permissions
- Breeding permissions are written through Tokotna, from the Perms tab on each Tokota.
- Only the owner of a Tokota may write a breeding permission.
- Slots permissions written on old Sire/Dam Owner Approval threads on DeviantArt are still usable unless they are on a broken journal.
- You cannot use a breeding slot to a Tokota you don’t own without a breeding permission.
- A Tokota must have AoAs and be of at least Average hierarchy in order to be bred.
- Submissive, Sterile, Infertile, and Tokotas out of usable breeding slots may not breed.
- Submissive Tokota slots written on or before December 31, 2016 are still able to be used.
- Any breeding using Submissive Tokotas has a chance at rolling an empty litter (no puppies).
- Until a Tokota is breedable, the only type of deal you may make in exchange for a slot to that Tokota must include making the Tokota breedable.
- Members may take on a deal to complete a Tokota's AoAs in exchange for a slot to it, or AoAs and HP to Average if the Tokota is Submissive.
- The only additional breeding permission terms Admins will enforce is “No Inbreeding”.
- Deadlines or “must be used by” dates in breeding slot rules are not allowed.
- New owners must honor breeding slots written by previous owners.
- Admins can force write a breeding slot if the buyer has contacted the seller and has not received a response after a set amount of time, usually two weeks or longer.
- Writing breeding slots to yourself before selling the Tokota is allowed, however you must inform the buyer before selling.
- Trading slots for other slots, items, art, or currency is allowed.
- Trading, selling, or promising breeding slots before the Tokota is breedable is not allowed.
- If a player has a personal rule that you may not resell the slot to their Tokota, it is common courtesy to abide by their rules. The group does not enforce no reselling.
- It is polite to contact the owner before reselling slots, even if they do not state it in their breeding slot rules.
Breeding Items & Totems
Many items and totems can be applied to breedings. Please see the Build Breeding Guide, Mane Breeding Guide, Base Coat Genetics Guide and Marking Genetics Guide for more information. Additionally you can view all items that can be used in breedings here.

Visible Inbreeding
You can check if inbreeding is present using the Tokotas Lineage Checker. If breeding Tokotas that are, or will be inbred, the following Health Statuses may occur in your litter:
- Blind: Tokotas that are blind will receive a -5% to success in any Fishing activity. These Tokotas also cannot participate in Working events.
- Deaf: Tokotas that are deaf will receive a -5% to success in any Hunting activity. These Tokotas also cannot participate in Teamwork events.
- Frail: Tokotas that are frail will receive a -5% to success in any Diving activity. These Tokotas also cannot participate in Sporting events.
- Lame: Tokotas that are lame will receive a -5% to success in any Caving activity. These Tokotas also cannot participate in Racing events.

- Infertility
- Deceased Pups
- Deceased genos cannot be transferred to other users. Comments dividing split litters with one or more deceased genos must indicate which split partner owns the deceased geno(s). A deceased geno (born after Nov 5th, 2019) can be resurrected with the use of a PotA Token earned by completing the Passage of the Alpha.

- All literature must be your own original work, adhere to rules laid out in the Group Rulebook and may not be re-used in multiple parts of the Tokotas group.
- Plagiarizing other writers’ work or AI (Artificial Intelligence) Generated Literature is prohibited in all aspects of the Tokotas Group. You may not use it for any submission, as whole or part of an image.

- Tokotas with the Shapeshifter Unique Trait may use their Registered Shapeshifter Form. If you are using the alternate form, its official reference must be linked on the appropriate form.
- The content can be anything you want! Tokotas hanging out, playing, curled up by the fire and so on, but they must be PG and not require a mature filter (cuddling is ok but no active mating.)
- Handlers/starters are not required.
- Submissions must be uploaded to your DeviantArt gallery, not sta.sh
- You may commission breeding images/stories.
- Breeding images/lit gain +2HP as if it were an activity, but cannot be submitted to TokoCenter to be rolled as an activity or reused for anything else within the group.
- If the breeding image/story needs edits, the breeding will be sent to corrections and you will be required to resubmit it.
- A unique image/literature piece is required each time you breed the same pair for your third breeding slot. Each entry can only be used once. Admins will comment on the submission when it is used.
Attempted Overbreeding/Overselling Slots
- Tokotas cannot breed past their currently available slot limits.
- Owners who are found overselling breeding slots may face a ban from breeding.
- If current slot holders can be adequately reimbursed for their purchase past the Tokota's current lifetime limit, the owner will receive a formal warning.
- If current slot holders cannot be adequately reimbursed for their purchase past the Tokota's current lifetime limit, the owner will receive a formal warning and the Tokota in question will be sterilized. It can never again earn more slots, but slot holders will be permitted to use their last slots.
- When purchasing a Tokota, be aware of how many slots are used and how many slot permissions are written for that Tokota so that you do not accidentally oversell/overwrite breeding slots.
- Exceptions may arise (e.g. a previous owner oversold slots and the current owner is attempting to earn more slots, etc.) which will be dealt with on a case by case basis. If you have a concern regarding your Tokota's current slot count (listed on the Tokota’s Slot page on their Tokotna import) please send a H.O.W.L.

Extraneous Comments
There is a maximum comment count on DeviantArt journals. Breeding threads fill up over a period of months, even years, to the point of reaching this limit and breaking. It is important to keep comment counts to an absolute minimum, especially since the DeviantArt Eclipse update where broken journals’ comments are completely wiped. Members can help reduce comment strain by respecting the following rules.
Apart from the original breeding comment, the only additional comments regular members should make is ownership transfer of genos. We understand that sometimes you make mistakes or change your minds after the original breeding comment is no longer editable! Therefore we recognize the following exceptions.
If, and only if, the original breeding comment is no longer editable (24 hours have passed since first posted), you are allowed one grace comment per breeding for one or a combination of the following circumstances:
- You or another player involved in the breeding may add or remove breeding items.
- You or another player involved in the breeding may swap out one of the Tokotas in the breeding.
- You or another player involved in the breeding may add or remove a hereditary trait or breeding companion.
- You or another player involved in the breeding may request that an Alpha Tokota is rolled as dominant.
You may add a comment only once. If you need to edit your breeding with more than one comment, hide the original comment and all subsequent replies and repost to the main thread. No one wants that, so post carefully!
Additionally, do not:
- Reply to the roller if you have a question or concern about your breeding result, including declined comments; instead send a H.O.W.L.
- Add an additional comment to tag a Tokota's owner if you forget to in your original comment; instead, note them a link to the breeding.
- Have conversations on the breeding thread. Do not comment on other members' litters.
- Tag other members just to show them the results of the breeding; instead, note them a link to the breeding.
- Comment that your Tokota has been updated to Dominant/Alpha. Rollers already check for their hierarchy on their import while rolling the breeding.
- Comment to confirm split breedings/permission to use a slot. This includes tagging your split partner to say the litter has been rolled.
- Comment "x to me" if you already have full ownership of the litter.
- Log genos for your own personal use (e.g. "sent to shrine", "uploaded"). Only admins may make such comments to avoid confusion. If you must keep track, do so in a private sta.sh, journal, or document.
Members who continue to add extraneous comments may be subject to a warning or possible ban from breeding.
